How Do You Find Peace in the Chaos?

Listen above for the entire episode on the Morning Mama Podcast!

How in the world do you have peace in the midst of the chaos? Are you feeling overwhelmed? Are you in a hard season? Are you in a fearful situation? Are things unmanageable right now? A lot of us are facing these exact things in our season of motherhood. You are not alone!

Many of these areas I’ve personally struggled with and I continue to hear God speak to me. I’m really excited to share with you what I’ve learned through this season.

In today’s blog, I’ll give you three key ways to help you find peace within the chaos.

Before we get into that I want to introduce myself. My name is Brittany, I am a wife, mom of 3 littles, church leader, and Marriage and Family Therapist turned coach. I run the Morning Mama Podcast where I get to help moms heal their minds and spirits so they can live the motherhood they were made for.

I’m excited, so let’s dive in together for today's blog!

Have you ever felt like everything in the world was starting at the same time?

That’s the way I’ve felt in this season and I didn’t always handle it well. At times there was so much pressure and I got anxious. God has really been talking to me a lot about what to do in these moments. Maybe I overcommitted to things. He reminded me of a verse from Proverbs 16:9 ESV “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” God’s been showing me that the pressure isn’t the problem, but it will inevitably be there sometimes.

Be careful not to over schedule your life.

If we’re trying to do all of the things all of the time, there’s no time for margin. This limits time to discipline or teach your child(ren). Overscheduling impacts quality time to just be together. We want to be mindful of how we are planning our time.

God’s been speaking to me and showing me that I can handle what He’s given me, but I need to be seeking Him first. Wherever He’s led me I need to be fully trusting of Him and not just spinning in circles, stressing, and trying to go crazy figuring out how I’m going to do it all. God doesn’t want us to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders; He wants to be right there with us helping us through. We must open our eyes first and fix them on Him.

When I was full of anxiety and trying to figure out how I was going to get it all done myself, it wasn’t coming from God. This was my pain cycle being activated and me not fully submitting to His spirit. There’s going to come a season of pressure where you just feel like you can’t handle it all and you don’t know what to do.

Three Ways for Finding Peace in the Chaos:

1.) PRAY:

When you find yourself in these moments of chaos, you need to stop what you’re doing and really pray. Ask Him “God this feels unimaginable, what do I do in this situation? How do I navigate this? What do you want me to do?” God changes things. So, when we pray for protection, guidance, victory and healing, stuff happens. That is real. It continues to remind us who’s in control. We aren’t the ones controlling our steps, He is. He is always in control and we need to learn to release it to Him.

2.) DON’T MAKE ANY DRASTIC DECISIONS:

Slow down and watch, then slow down again. Let the peace of God saturate you. Sit on the problem. When we just spin our heads and run around like crazy chickens, we’re not doing anyone any good. We’re not really solving the problem. What we’re doing is getting caught up in anxiety. We end up creating more of a mess when we’re just trying to do it on our own strength. When we slow down and let God, the sense of peace that only comes from Him can then soak into us. We can sit on the problem and then He is going to reveal that supernatural solution to us. I’ve been trying to do just this. I’ll say “God, I don’t know how this is going to all work out, but I’m going to step back and believe that you have a solution.” It might also sound like this, “God, I know you’re going to get me through this. I know that you’ve got good things in store and I’m going to be able to get through this without stress, anxiety, or worry.”

3.) FIX YOUR EYES:

Fixing our eyes starts with turning off social media. This is stealing so much time and joy from our lives. The endless notifications are time consuming and taking precious time away. During the wildfires that recently happened near our home, alerts were frequently going off on our phones. This ended up causing me to become obsessed with the constant updates. In my case, this didn’t cause me to have increased fear, but for some it may have. I felt like I wasted so much time on checking notifications, looking at pictures, and reading the posts in comments. I could have been in prayer or been talking to you and encouraging you about how I’m staying in peace, even though there was a lot of uncertainty. I probably should have been packing, but constantly checking all of these things did nothing to fix problematic the situation I was potentially in.

It reminds me of Philippians 4: 4-8 “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

This just shows that I was just obsessing over nothing helpful. Wherever you are at and whatever challenges you’re facing; the pressure, the uncertainty, potentially fear, fix your eyes on God. Fix your eyes on His spirit, on His leading, on what is good, and He will guide you into what is helpful.

When we stay calm, there is a solution to every problem.

Once I fully submit to God, I can sit back and wait, pray, and watch for His hand and movement. His spirit leads and guides me to what I’m going to do. Once that happens, the solutions start to emerge. If we stay calm, there’s a solution to every problem. It may feel like everything is riding on our shoulders, but in fact that is when we need to release it all to Him. God’s got it on His shoulders. Sometimes silence, patience, and the season of waiting is when we’ll hear His voice clearest. If we’re stuck in anxiety and our minds are spiraling, we won’t hear Him. We have to slow down in order to be in tune to hear His voice.

Reflection:

If you’re in a season with a lot of pressure, a lot of chaos and uncertainty, it’s not just that He’s going to walk you out of it. The intensity of the moment and the season is going to build something inside of you that is more valuable than gold. He’s using it for your good and refining you through it. You don’t want to miss it.

How we miss it is we get caught up in anxiety. We end up getting caught in the worry, in the control, and in the problem solving we miss the refining. Refining only happens when we surrender and we fully submit. This is when we are able to be led by His spirit and we’re more in tune with how He is leading us. We can listen for a voice saying “Hey, I have this for you. Just wait for me. Wait for my timing. Just watch, daughter. I’ve got you.” We can easily miss that if we’re not careful.

I’m so glad you came here today to read this special message. Amongst the chaos and pressures of life, our God is here with us. Only He can determine our steps. As much as we think we can handle it all, we can’t do it alone. In the midst of the constant changing of seasons, we must fix our eyes on God and Him alone. Even with uncertainty and the feeling of things crumbling around us, God is the only solution to all of our problems. We are never without hope when we take the time to be filled with the Spirit of the Lord, even when everything around us is uncertain.
